Dave's Engineering Philosophy #1

I worked with Dave at Boeing on two occasions. In 1998 and 1999 we worked on the same R & D project. I knew Dave but we worked in different areas so we did not interact that much. However, seven years later around 2005/2006 Dave returned to an R&D group I was in. For the last 5 years we worked together as Dave sat at a desk near mine. During one project I learned the first Dave’s Engineering Philosophy. Dave and I worked on a project to support the 787 program and we had two young fresh out of school engineers we worked with off and on. One of these young engineers was always asking questions, which normally is a good sign, but as our interactions with this young man evolved it was turning into a source of constant interruptions for me. When this young engineer came to our lab I was interrupted at least once every 20 minutes with “Mike, how do you do this?” Dave knew I was getting very exasperated so after I returned assisting him in a nearby cubicle Dave looked at me with a smile and said, “You need to tell him RTFM”. I said, “What do you mean RTFM?” and Dave said, “You know, Read the Manual.” The “F” stands for, we really mean READ THE MANUAL. Turns out Dave had been advised with this philosophy early in his career and he made it a part of his engineering practice. For all who worked with Dave, you know, he really practiced RTFM.
